Dramaturgy & New Play Development
Charlie Peters has served as President and Chair of the Dramaturgical Committee of the Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre.
Charlie has been a director and facilitator for devised projects and collective creations including Theatre on the Trail and Theatre in the Pool: Earth Diver (Sum Theatre), and Saskatchewan Outdoors (Embrace Theatre). He uses his clown training to create pieces of physical theatre laced with social commentary which have been presented at festivals across Western Canada. He is currently working as a director/dramaturge on various theatre and inter-disciplinary projects with a wide variety of artists.
In 2017, Charlie worked as a dramaturge for Overhear, an outdoor, roving, one-audience-member-at-a-time pod-play produced by It’s Not A Box Theatre in Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver, and Paris, France. He has served as dramaturge for The Wild Dog Waits on the Concrete Path by Nathan Howe, Lack of a Love Story by Danielle Roy (workshop), and served as workshop director – with Gordon Portman as the workshop dramaturge – for a workshop of Jason Heit’s Text Match produced by the Saskatchewan Playwright’s Centre.
He has twice interned at the Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre’s Spring Festival of New Plays, first with Conni Massing and then with Yvette Nolan. The later internship, with Yvette Nolan, saw him assist with the translation of Shakespeare excerpts into American Sign Language as part of Adam Pottle’s play Ultrasound. Charlie has also interned with Angus Ferguson workshoping Operation Big Rock by Joel Bernbaum (which was staged at Dancing Sky Theatre in April, 2014).
